Christchurch has been rebuilding for over a decade. Merivale, Fendalton, Halswell, Rolleston — across the city and out into Selwyn, there's been steady demand for builders, plumbers, electricians, and renovation specialists. That demand hasn't gone away, but the competition for it has gone up. Tradies who rely on referrals alone find the pipeline unpredictable. The ones who get found on Google have work queued up weeks in advance.
This guide covers the practical steps to get more jobs in Christchurch — without a marketing agency, without a big budget, and without spending your weekends on social media. For the full Christchurch digital strategy, see our Christchurch tradie marketing guide.
The opportunity in Christchurch
With around 400,000 people, Christchurch is New Zealand's second largest city. The rebuild created a culture of renovation and new construction that's still running. Suburbs like Hornby and Halswell have seen significant residential growth. Rangiora and Rolleston are adding new housing estates. There's genuine work available.
The issue is visibility. When a homeowner in Sumner needs a plasterer, or a landlord in Riccarton needs a plumber, they search Google. If you're not showing up, you don't exist to them. Being good at the job isn't enough if nobody can find you.
Step 1: Build a website that mentions your suburbs
Most tradies in Christchurch either have no website or have one that just says "serving Christchurch." That's a missed opportunity. Google matches searches to page content. If your site mentions specific suburbs, you rank for suburb-specific searches.
A plumber whose site names Riccarton, St Albans, Papanui, Addington, and Bishopdale has five times more chances to appear in local searches than one whose site only says "Christchurch plumber." It's not about keyword stuffing — just writing naturally about where you actually work.
Your homepage needs to answer three questions in the first few seconds: what do you do, where do you work, and how do you get in touch? Keep it simple. Make the phone number tappable. Don't make people scroll to find your contact details.

Step 2: Set up your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is what puts you in the map pack — the box of local results that appears when someone searches "electrician near me" or "builder Fendalton." This is prime real estate and it's free.
Setting it up properly takes about 30 minutes:
- Verify your business with Google (they send a postcard or can call you)
- Fill in your business name, phone number, and service areas
- Add your website link
- Upload 8 to 10 photos of real jobs you've completed
- Set your trading hours
- List the suburbs you cover in the service area section
Once it's live, keep it updated. Add new photos after jobs. Respond to reviews. Even a short reply to a positive review shows Google your profile is active, which helps your ranking.
Step 3: Ask for reviews after every job
In Christchurch's tradie market, reviews separate the businesses that rank from the ones that don't. A business with 25 genuine reviews shows up above one with 4, in almost every local search.
Text your customers the day after the job finishes. Something like: "Thanks for the work this week. If you're happy with the job, a Google review would really help us out — here's the link." Paste the direct link to your review page so they don't have to search for it.
Most customers are happy to leave a review if you ask and make it easy. Most won't bother if you wait for them to do it unprompted. One text message is all it takes.
If you do 3 jobs a week and ask after each one, you'll have 50 or 60 reviews by the end of the year. That puts you in the top tier of Christchurch tradies on Google.
Step 4: Get specific about the areas you cover
Christchurch sprawls from Cashmere in the hills to Hornby in the west, and out to Rolleston and Rangiora in Selwyn. Homeowners want someone local. A homeowner in Spreydon doesn't want to pay travel costs for someone from the other side of the city.
On your website and Google Business Profile, list your service areas specifically. If you cover the inner city and surrounds, name Addington, Riccarton, St Albans, Papanui, and Merivale. If you cover the western suburbs, name Hornby, Sockburn, Halswell, and Wigram.
Being specific helps with search and also sets honest expectations with customers. They know before they call whether you cover their area.
Step 5: Show photos from real Christchurch jobs
Before-and-after photos of actual work build trust faster than anything you can write. A deck job in Cashmere, a kitchen in Fendalton, a bathroom in Merivale — these tell a homeowner that you've done this type of work in their kind of suburb before.
Take photos on your phone at every job. Shoot before you start, during the work, and after you're done. A caption like "Bathroom renovation, Sumner — 2-week project" is all you need. Upload them to your Google Business Profile and your website.
Even a small gallery of 10 or 15 real jobs puts you ahead of most Christchurch tradies who show up with no photos at all.
What about the rebuild jobs?
A lot of Christchurch tradies built their reputation through earthquake-related repair and rebuild work. That pipeline has changed. The IAG and EQC jobs have mostly finished, and the market has returned to standard residential and commercial work.
If you built a client base through the rebuild, now is the time to make sure those clients can find you again when they need non-EQC work. A website with your contact details, your service areas, and some photos means they can refer you easily, and means new clients searching Google can find you too.

Start this week
Getting more Christchurch jobs doesn't require a marketing budget. It requires a website Google can read, a Google Business Profile that's actually filled out, and a habit of asking customers for reviews.
That's three things. Do all three and you'll have more enquiries than most tradies in the city, because most tradies haven't done any of them properly.
