If you're an Auckland tradie and you're not doing anything online to market your business, you're leaving work on the table every single week. Someone in Grey Lynn is searching for a painter. Someone in Takapuna needs a plumber. Someone in Manukau wants a quote for a new deck. They're all on Google, right now, and whoever shows up first gets the call.
Online marketing for tradies doesn't need to be complicated. This guide covers the channels that actually work in Auckland, and what to skip.
The three things that matter most
For an Auckland tradie, three channels drive the majority of local enquiries from the internet:
- Your Google Business Profile (the map listing)
- Your website (what Google links to and what customers land on)
- Google reviews (what convinces them to call you instead of your competitor)
Everything else — Instagram, Facebook, flyer drops, Neighbourly posts — is secondary. Not worthless, but secondary. Get these three working before you spend time on anything else.
Your Google Business Profile
This is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local pack at the top of search results. When someone in Remuera searches "bathroom tiler near me," they see a map with three businesses pinned on it. Getting into that map pack is the highest-value thing most tradies can do online.
To claim and set up your listing, go to business.google.com. Google will send you a verification code by postcard or phone call. Once verified:
- Set your service areas to the specific Auckland suburbs you work in. Don't just say "Auckland" — list Ponsonby, Mt Eden, Grey Lynn, Newmarket, Parnell, or wherever you actually go.
- Upload at least 8 photos of real completed jobs. No stock images.
- Write a business description that mentions your trade and your service areas.
- Add your website link.
- Set your trading hours and keep them accurate.
Once it's set up, check in monthly. Add new photos. Reply to reviews. Google tracks profile activity, and active profiles rank better.
Your website
Your website is what people land on after they click your listing or your name in Google search. It has one job: convince them to call or send an enquiry. That means it needs to load fast, look professional on a phone, and answer the three questions every visitor has — what do you do, where do you work, and how do they contact you.
For Auckland specifically, your website should name suburbs. A painter's site that mentions Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Mt Eden, Epsom, and Remuera ranks for suburb-specific searches. A painter's site that just says "Auckland" ranks for nothing specific.
Photos matter more than text on a tradie website. Before-and-afters, job-in-progress shots, finished work with a suburb and job type in the caption. A Howick kitchen reno photo is more persuasive than 500 words about your commitment to quality.

Google reviews
Reviews are the conversion mechanism. Someone finds your Google listing. They see you have 28 reviews averaging 4.9 stars. They click through to your website. They call you. That's the sequence.
Without reviews, you might rank well but still not get the call — homeowners skip past businesses with no reviews or just a handful.
The system to collect reviews is simple: text each customer after the job with a direct link to leave a review. One message. Don't ask twice. Most people who are happy with the work will do it if you make it easy. Aim to add 2 or 3 new reviews a month. After six months you'll have more than most of your competitors.
What about social media?
Instagram and Facebook can work for tradies, but they work differently from Google. Social media is where people see your work and remember you exist. Google is where they go when they're ready to hire someone.
If you enjoy posting, post. Before-and-afters do well. So do time-lapse videos of a job in progress. But don't put social media ahead of your Google presence. People don't usually scroll Instagram when they've got a leaking pipe.
One exception: Facebook community groups like the ones for Devonport, Albany, or Howick locals. Tradies who respond helpfully in those groups build a local reputation. But that's relationship-building, not lead generation — it works over months, not days.
What about paid advertising?
Google Ads can generate leads immediately, but they're expensive in Auckland. High-competition keywords like "plumber Auckland" or "electrician Auckland" can cost $20 to $50 per click. If your site doesn't convert well, you'll spend money and get nothing.
Paid ads make sense once you have a solid website and Google Business Profile already working. Use them to scale something that's already converting, not to fix a marketing problem at the foundation.
What doesn't work for Auckland tradies
A few things get recommended to tradies that waste time and money:
Directory listings on sites other than Google typically don't drive much work. Yellow Pages and Finda are rarely where Auckland homeowners go first. Your time is better spent on your Google Business Profile.
Flyer drops can generate a few calls in tight suburb communities, but the conversion rate is low and the cost per lead is high compared to Google.
Having "someone build your social media presence" without a clear strategy usually means paying for posts that no one sees. Auckland homeowners don't follow their plumber on Instagram.
The order to do things in
If you're starting from scratch, here's the sequence that makes sense:
- Get a website — something that loads fast, names your service areas, and has a click-to-call number
- Set up and verify your Google Business Profile, linked to your website
- Start collecting reviews after every job
- Add photos to your Google profile monthly
- After 3 months, assess whether Google Ads make sense to add volume
Most Auckland tradies who follow this sequence see enquiry volume go up within 4 to 8 weeks, once Google has indexed the site and the profile is verified.
